Wayne and I took a road trip to visit with some friends who live in Richmond, Vermont. We spent the afternoon in Burlington where I lived for three years while in graduate school in the 1990s. It’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty years since I was last there! Wayne also went to University of Vermont and managed, then co-owned a legendary restaurant (to Burlington and Portland, Maine locals), Carbur’s. We did not ride in the play VW Bus pictured above which was at Ben & Jerry’s in downtown Burlington.
The Vermont foliage wasn’t peaking the way it is in Maine and parts of New Hampshire, but we saw so many beautiful and interesting things:
Springfield, New Hampshire
4 Aces Diner, which is an actual 1950s diner car with a house built around it, in West Lebanon, New Hampshire.
This was the BEST corned beef hash I have ever had! How many places have you been to that advertise “our own corned beef hash” on the menu that turns out to be from a can (or tastes and looks like it)? I know it’s been many places for me. My hash had gigantic chunks of freshly made corned beef, and was actually more meat than potatoes. However, it also came with eggs and roasted potatoes. They know what they’re doing here which was evidenced by the super-long lines.
Richmond, Vermont
Church Street, downtown Burlington, Vermont.
Lake Champlain!
Relaxing in our friend’s backyard before dinner.
We ate at the Creek House Diner in Bethel, Vermont early this morning. I ordered the oatmeal which was old fashioned oats–none of that pasty instant stuff–with real maple syrup, raisins and bananas. Wayne ordered eggs, home fries and toast- also a winner. We loved our breakfast, the diner itself, the country music playing and our super sweet server.
A great trip with the most wonderful person I know!!!!!

Sounds like a very nice weekend. Don’t think I’ve ever been to Burlington VT. Certainly seen Lake Champlain. Beautiful photos. Love the corn beef hash photo! Yum! Jim was drooling when I showed him your photo.
Wayne is looking pretty dapper these days. So relaxed. You both look so happy. 💓
We’re off to FL on Wed. Really enjoying the fall colors. Will miss them. Tonight at sunset, the sky went from pink to orange and then burgundy. Beautiful reflections off the pond and trees. Everything was glowing. Will miss that but we do get spectacular sunsets at our house in FL. Will send you one when I get down there.
Take care. Sylvia 😘

Thank you Sylvia. Averyl’s adventurous spirit gets us to some amazing places. Like St. Ann’s in Kennebunkport for example………….

Thanks, Sylvia. We will miss knowing you are in Maine but happy for you that you will be warm! Our backyard woods are just turning colors now, and when the leaves fall we do get some wonderful sunset views as a backdrop to the bare trees. Looking forward to hearing about your Florida adventures and seeing your pics!! Have a safe trip! 😘 (Re the corned beef hash and my baking, Jim has good taste. 😀

Gorgeous photos, and I’m envious of the trip!
Also, a pay phone?!

Thanks, Nathan! I was also shocked to see a payphone, too. It brought back memories of my first ever cell phone which was in Burlington. It was a “bag” phone which pretty much came with a little suitcase and antenna. So funny to think back on the early technology.

I just went on a trip to Vermont in the Burlington and Jericho area two weeks ago. I told a little bit about it in my blog. I grew up in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and visit up north when I can. Great blog and pictures.

I’ve never had corned beef hash or seen it. I don’t think it’s a thing here in Texas.

It’s a diner staple here in the Northeast!
