Footprints in the Snow

Around 1:00 a.m. I heard a delicate sound that seemed like it was by the bedroom window; it was very faint and dainty and not the kind that implies danger. It was actually somewhat soothing and I drifted off into a surreal dream: I was outside at nighttime and saw a strange creature under the streetlamp. It was the size and shape of a chipmunk and had a deer-like face. I got out of bed at 4:30 (my usual time) and was pouring coffee when Wayne said from the bedroom: “Averyl. Come here.”Ā I saw he was looking outside the window and he moved aside so I could see.Ā

There were at least two deer at my neighbor’s house across the street! As I snapped this grainy pic one of them looked up and saw me. I ran into the sunroom to get a better view but it turned out that they had crossed the street and were standing right in front of my sunroom only feet away from me!

It was as if my dream had morphed into a rational reality! FOUR deer were outside my window nervously looking at me. In an instant they leapt up into the air and disappeared into the still, dark woods. They did it so quickly and gracefully, and the sound of their hooves on the snowy ground sounded like Santa’s reindeer taking off into the night!

As the sun rose I was able to see from my bedroom window where and how close they had been to us as we lay asleep. I thought it was cute that they also used the path Wayne had cleared for the oil delivery man.

I followed their tracks to our woods.

Maybe they will soon return! You can see my video of them in my Instagram stories for the next 24 hours.

It’s these unexpected encounters with nature at home that really energize me, lift my spirits and help me feel like we live in a little enchanted forest in the midst of Greater Portland, Maine.

  1. A magical post, Averyl! It made me smile. I love where you live. I would so love to live in a similar place. As it is, I’ll just live vicariously through your blog. šŸ˜‰ Merry Christmas to you and Wayne!!

  2. How lovely!! We used to have deer living in our woods in N. Florida. I was usually the only one who saw them. However, on one occasion there was a group of them at our front gate. It was as if they wanted us to open the gate and let them in. Both my son and I saw them (so I wasn’t crazy after all). Living here in Fort Worth I have yet to see a deer šŸ™‚ But, the squirrels and birds in our back yard compensate somewhat. I hope you see your visitors again soon. Thanks for sharing.

    1. What’s funny is that most everyone else but me had seen deer at my house! My neighbor’s little girls and her husband have seen them; my next door neighbor once texted me a photo of one in my yard;Wayne once saw a buck when he pulled in from work! We have a fresh blanket of snow on the ground so I’ll be able to see fresh tracks. šŸ™‚ I hope they’ll be back, too!
