Silent Night, Silent Day?!

That bad cold I mentioned yesterday has now also given me laryngitis. I was so sad that we had to miss church this morning! This is my favorite time of year and because I’m sick I can’t be a part of some important-to-me social opportunities. However, I’m attempting to reframe this in a positive light: In the past when I’ve visited Sister Aline at the Marine Joseph Spiritual Center in Biddeford Pool there have been occasions when there was a silent retreat in progress. Participants wore a little sign the size of a name tag explaining that they are not speaking. So isn’t this great news, that I now have a Christmas silent retreat happening in my home!! (Not so silent sigh). I’m communicating with Wayne via a writing pad and fake sign language I’m making up as I go along.

This morning I had the energy to set up our Christmas table:

My late Nana’s musical rotating Santa Claus with falling snow, the very one I stared at in wonder as a little girl, has traditionally been the centerpiece. It sits atop a “God Jul” (Merry Christmas) Swedish table topper.

I placed tiny vintage mercury glass balls around the base of the music box.

Vintage Christmas tree tumblers for our sparkling cider.

Antique candlesticks Wayne and I bought together at his first estate sale this past fall hold red beeswax candles.

Tomorrow I really hope I’m feeling better because we’re heading to Whole Foods to pick up our standing rib roast and I love that tradition.

My wish for you, my dear readers, is to have good health, a voice that’s valued no matter the volume and to feel loved because love is what Christmas is all about! My Lord is love and I don’t need to be doing or saying anything to feel it. Maybe I’ll even get my voice back for Christmas so I can make my anticipated long-distance phone calls to family.

  1. Hope you have your voice back, Averyl, and that your Christmas was blessed! I was miserable for a week before Christmas and then that morning started to take a turn for the better. God bless!

    1. Glad you’re on the mend, Aileen! Wayne too me to the doctor yesterday and I have bronchitis. I just started antibiotics. I might be “out” for some time, this is a really nasty thing.
