I’ve spent most of my life feeling like a stodgy old lady. “Little House on the Prairie” was one of my favorite TV shows as a kid, tied with “The Brady Bunch” and “Leave it to Beaver.” I really appreciate many (but not all) of the “square” sentiments in this little early 1960s booklet, The Return of the Square: The Fight for Independence, since I still often feel so “irrelevant” and old-fashioned. It’s the text of a speech by “Madison Avenue’s favorite phrase-maker,” an original Mad Man, Charles H Brower.

  1. 😆 Yes, ma’am! Sign me up. I am a proud square. For example – Ben and I are very involved in our neighborhood association (it’s a civic organization, not an HOA). We live in a part of town that is being gently gentrified but still has more than its fair share of jerks who do the wrong thing. The other day, we called the non-emergency number after Ben witnessed a pack of preteens walking down the road smoking weed in broad daylight. This is likely the same group responsible for some of the vandalism in our neighborhood. We posted about it on our association’s social media page, and we were good-naturedly called “narcs” by a friend. YOU’RE DARN TOOTIN!! 😆
