Snooty ghosts hovered around old houses along the winding road to the Inn that brought passers by to inviting nooks and crannies. Inside the lobby of the Inn, starched people laughed and sipped cold beverages. Outside, a veranda displayed a view of the water with a faraway mountain watermark in the hazy pale sky. The dim library housed well-aged books, and as I entered the room the wood floor creaked like an ornery granny reprimanding me for not being more ladylike in my footsteps. The shelves were filled with titles from a time that only those beyond had experienced. Alone in the room with just the hundreds of us, I felt that I was about to be entrusted with their secrets. I ran my finger along their spines and stopped at the title, Now Or Never, or, The Adventures of Bobby Bright by Oliver Optic*.
I shot these photos two years ago when Wayne and I took a morning walk in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. We spoke of life, death, and the mystery of what’s to come. The sunlight, crisp air and golden descent of decaying leaves back to earth where they will cover and nourish the ground was stunning. When I looked into the “eyes” of the old moss covered statues they seemed to be possessed with the spirits of people we’ve never met.
Last weekend was the grande finale for our honeymoon in New England! Our first stop was at a little antique school house in New Hampshire to have a hearty new England breakfast.
Wayne and I left early yesterday morning to head over to Sunday River Ski Resort to take a scenic ski lift ride. It was another great addition to our Autumn in New England Honeymoon Weekends!
Saturday was sunny and crisp. We left early for a day trip up coastal Route One to the charming town of Camden, Maine with stops in between; our first was the Maine State Prison Showroom in Thomaston.
We aren’t going on a traditional honeymoon. In lieu of traveling someplace for a week or so we’re enjoying fall in New England which is living our dream. Today we went apple picking at an organic orchard in Hiram, ate at a new-to-us airport diner in Limington and explored antique shops in Cornish.
Wayne and I spent Friday night at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. When we arrived it was a beautiful sunny day…
It was another foggy day that added a mystical beauty to the evening sky.
Wayne and I enjoyed a wonderful al fresco breakfast at Inn By the Sea in Cape Elizabeth this morning followed by a walk along the gardens and path to the beach.
What a beautiful morning!
