Yesterday morning we went apple picking for the fourth time this season and took a drive to admire the stunning colors now that they’re peaking. One of the countless things I love about living in Maine is that you don’t need to spend money other than on gas to “do things”. I can’t think of a better production than what is happening around us right now and it’s completely free to witness. I hope you’ll vicariously enjoy our drive and scenic stops along the way:
This simple, wholesome recipe for New England Brown Betty is made with a handful of ingredients and is adapted from my 1936 copy of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book. It’s a good way to make use of stale bread, too, which I happened to have handy. Speaking of handy things, I also made my first-ever batch of 100% hand whipped cream with my new rotary beater! It wasn’t difficult at all!
At the express check-out line at Whole Foods this morning I was greeted by the cashier who often checks me out weekly, so to speak. He’s always very jovial, not just to me but everyone, but he said something that startled me!
“You are a great lover.”

Wayne recently started a new job so our New England autumnal honeymoon is relegated to the weekends. I wanted to surprise him with something special after work. I knew he was dreading dinner somewhat because I was going to make the farmer’s market kale as a side dish. He hates kale but promised he’d give it a try, and only if I “cooked the **** out of it” and added loads of butter. What I didn’t tell him was that I was setting a special autumn themed table in the sunroom and serving rib eye steak and deep dish apple pie along with said sad kale.
We aren’t going on a traditional honeymoon. In lieu of traveling someplace for a week or so we’re enjoying fall in New England which is living our dream. Today we went apple picking at an organic orchard in Hiram, ate at a new-to-us airport diner in Limington and explored antique shops in Cornish.
It has been a very unseasonably hot and humid day, today! Early-ish this morning Wayne and I did a little apple-picking at Randall Orchard, but even then it was very muggy.
